#Opinion FILM INDUSTRY CAN BE A SOLUTION TO UNEMPLOYMENT IF THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT DARES INVEST IN IT By James Soi I recently watched a gospel movie by one evangelist Paul Kirui titled MAPESA. The theme is simple, the set is natural and traditional, the cast is simple and the message is easy to understand. I laughed and loved the movie, its hilarious to just sit and watch a movie that you can relate to and at some point the actors speak our native language. Mr Kirui and crew now earn a living out if the movie apart from preaching and singing. The talent in our county is immense, raw and unexploited. The few who have tried with their own efforts and triumphed, the likes of Comedian Sergon, Emmy Kosgei and others have shown that talent do exist in Baringo. What is lacking is the platform and financial resources to bring this talents out as well as promote the products. In our villages we always come across persons with exceptional talents who fizzle out with time due to lack of a helping hand to shine out their talents to fore where it can earn them a living. Something can be and must done to salvage other talents not go to waste. In major towns like Nairobi, Nakuru or Mombasa just to name a few, there are public social halls where the youth practice and nurture their acting, singing and oral talents. Unfortunately, there is none in Baringo that am aware of. Film industry is capital intensive and the county government can invest in it on behalf of the youth who would wish to act but cannot afford. Film industry can also raise the profile of our county and in the end may attract worthwhile investors and tourists. Nigerian government supports and encourages the film industry as it employs thousands of its people directly and indirectly. It further generates income in the form of taxes. Subsequently, the Nigerias film industry is currently ranked the second largest film industry in the world after India. It is worth 3.5 billion US dollars. It churns out 50 movies per week. The county government, on a pilot basis, may set up a budget just to tap such talent and in due time roll it out commercially. It may have its priorities set but any priority that does not factor into youth employment and empowerment need a second thought. I am sure in Baringo County, we have sufficient and immense talent so to the landscape to sustain a film industry, lets get the support.
