Opinion: The situation in Ukraine cum Crimea is both dicey and easy.Dicey in the sense that it involves political muscling between US and Russia and as usual when two elephants struggle, the grasses suffer .But easy if we go by the letters of international law..Russias opinion is such that they have a right to protect their citizens and Crimea has a right to self determination, US position has to do with the respect for sovereignty of nations .My take without much ado is simple especially when compared with precedents. While Crimean people have a right to self determination they must carry it out in the most legitimate means .The constitution of Ukraine stipulates that for any vote on secession to take place, it has to be approved by the Ukrainian parliament.This is similar to the situation in UK as regards Scotland. Solution..Obviously when the referendum goes on come Sunday and as speculated Crimea people will vote for independence , Russia as usual will accept and annex them, however instead of sanctions on Russia , I suggest the matter be taken to the International Court of justice for determination.It is most likely that the outcome would be four walls with the case of Nigeria,Cameroon and Bakassi.It will take years but it will diffuse tension.I appreciate that ICJ lacks enforcement but litigation reveals intentions averts confrontation and resolves conflicts.Crimea is important but there is not enough interest to destabilise the entire world.
