Opportunity to assist in the development of a delicious new berry!! "Haskap berry" (Japanese blue honeysuckle) was introduced to North America for the first time in 2000. Since 2001, Maxine Thompson, retired Horticulture Prof. at OSU, has been engaged in a breeding program in Corvallis to develop superior individual plants worthy of being released as varieties. This year, promising selections have been made and many plants propagated from them. These plants need to be evaluated to identify the very best. Sadly, USDA grant funds have dried up so there is a need for help in evaluations. Anyone interested in establishing a trial plot must sign a Material Transfer Agreement that basically states that you will not propagate and sell plants and that you will evaluate them and provide your observations to the breeder. A trialing fee of $10 per plant is requested. A trial plot of 12 plants is suggested but as few as 3, or more, plants will be OK. This is a win-win situation; you can obtain plants of a unique new berry, and I can receive valuable input from you. If interested, please phone Maxine at 541 745-7266 or e-mail at [email protected] for more information and to obtain plants. Note: the spelling of my name in the e-mail address involves an "m" at the end of my name instead of an "n".
