Orchard City Fc held their end of season awards on Saturday 16th June. Winning 4 trophies in our first season has been a phenomenal achievement for management and the players. Every man in the squad could have won an award for their performances and dedication this season. But there is always one or two that just stand out in any team and on this occasion there was one especially. Voted by his fellow players, supporters and manager; Club Captain, Chrisy Havern done a clean sweep of three awards and well deserved. Player of the Year: Chrisy Havern Supporters Player of the Year: Chrisy Havern Players Player of the Year: Chrisy Havern Top Goal Scorer: Stephen Daly (Stitch) Supporter of the Year: Fergie McGahan (The Lord Mayor) Also a big congratulations to Dean Mc Connell for winning Carnbane 1st Division Player of the Year and Stitch on winning Carnbane 1st Division Top Goal Scorer. Both players have many more awards to come off they continue this sort of form. But as mentioned before, every man in the squad could have won awards. Let’s have a quick snap shot of each player: Joe Price: Professional, dedicated, reliable and safe is what Joe is. He made the most appearances for the club this season and kept 18 clean sheets and only conceded 14 league goals in 39 appearances. Certainly was worth 12-15 points this season with some fantastic saves. Stephen Daly: Deadly round the box. Stitch was the club and leagues top goal scorer with 32 goals in 37 appearances. His hold up play and eye for the goal along with his love for the club is what makes Stitch the perfect striker. This lad can challenge Mr O’Hare for top goal scorer next season if he stays fit and sharp. Chrisy Havern: Club Captain and a true born winner. Rock solid, commanding in the air, last ditch tackles, blood and guts. That basically sums up Mr Havern. Made 34 appearances and towards the end of season was carrying a nasty injury but still made a man of the match performance against Windmill in the AOH Cup. And scored 8 goals. Barney Havern: An old fashioned holding midfielder. An opponent’s nightmare. Constantly breaking up play and stopping any attack on our goal. Takes no prisoners and his work rate is 125%. Made 30 appearances and chipped in with 7 goals. Dean Mc Connell: Come into the team in September and made 29 appearances and scored 11 goals. The second half of the season Deano turned into the league’s most lethal winger. He made the ball do magic at times with is quick feet and trickery. Can ride a tackle from the hardest of men. Never complains and just loves to play. And that is why he won Carnbane 1st Division Player of the Year. Jonny Black: How he has any energy left for the game after his ritual pre match routines!!!. Jonny is what our club’s type football is all about. His eye for a pass, should it be a 1 yarder or a 40 yard spray to the wings is sometimes breath taking. His professionalism and love for the game is infectious and that can clearly be seen with the younger players in the squad as he is always encouraging and advising them. Made 26 appearances and scored 2 goals this season. Tucker Mc Cann: Special, Special and very Special. Tucker loves the ball. Just give him the ball and he can do anything with it. Doesn’t matter if there are 3 players beside him. He wants the ball. And he won’t waste it either. Hardworking is an understatement. This lad covers every blade of grass. His clean unique way of tackling amazes everyone. A real special player. An injury free season ahead of him and he will be hard to stop for any amount of awards next season. 26 appearances and 7 goals Darren Hillen (Hilly): A heart as big as himself. Loves the game. Loves the glory and most of all; loves the team. Hilly had a stop start season with injuries but when this man is on song he is lethal. The supporters love him. He works his butt off for the team and this lad has talent in abundance. Next season will be his. 25 appearances and 13 goals. Jason Niblock: Solid and dependable. Jason can play anywhere, and ask him to empty himself he will do it. Sort of player when you want to close out a game he is perfect. Stops opponents in their tracks, but chips in plenty with the passing and attacking of our game. Jason made 25 appearances scoring 2 goals. Lee Feeney: Pure Class. Feeno has it all. His ability to slow and speed a game up is unreal. The technique he has for creating space is unique and with him in the team you are guaranteed goals and some fantastic pass and move football. Thee character in the team. Always some story to tell. Even if 90% of it pure blagging, his team mates just love him. He keeps the banter level high but at the same time preaches professionalism. Made 24 appearances and scored 5 goals. Stephen Hutchinson: Come into the team just before Christmas. An attacking left back, Hutchy mixes his tackling with forward runs and crosses into the box that any striker would thrive on. He is the perfect athlete, constantly training and pushing for perfection. His excellent season didn’t go unnoticed as he is now with Warrenpoint Town for a go at the Irish Premier League. Proud of you Hutchy. Enjoy it. Made 23 appearances and scored 6 goals. Peter Markey: Hard as nails. An honest defender who takes no crap. Tough tackling mixed with speed and agility makes Markey a king pin in our defence. Few injuries this season held him back. But when he was fit, this lad is what any team needs. Heart and guts in abundance. Loves the craic and banter and always up for prank. Big season ahead for Mr Markey. Made 22 appearances and scored 3 goals. Gavin Foy (Foyzer): Best crosser of a ball in this league by far. Doesn’t need to beat 1, 2 or 3 players to cross a ball. He can whip it in from anywhere. Work commitments stuttered his season but Foyzer on song is a lethal attacking force. Hope to have him back next season regular and if so he will add another level to our attacking prowess. Made 17 appearances and scored 6 goals. Stephen Wylie: Might be the baby of the squad. But he plays like a pro. Tackling, vision, creating and breaking play up Stevie has it all. Learning from his seniors around him this lad can make it big in the future. An honest hard working midfielder, Stevie will be a big asset to OCFC next season. Made 17 appearances and scored 5 goals. Darren Clarke: Centre half that takes no nonsense. Does his job like a true pro. Clarke wins everything in the air and commands his zone to perfection. A super fit player who gives his all for the team. His dedication and commitment to the team is top class and nothing or no one fazes him. Made 16 appearances and scored 1 goal. George Purdy: Started the season off as a regular, but as it progressed work commitments and getting married limited his appearances. George is a hard working wide midfielder and when asked to do a job for OCFC he did it with heart and sweat. Played 15 games and scored 1 goal. Mark Ervine: Joined is mid-season from Moneyslane. Well known for his goal scoring and ability to hold the ball and bring other into play. Not easy coming into a winning team and trying to nail down a regular place. But next season will see a rejuvenated Mark and his goals will be very welcome. Made 12 appearances and scored 2 goals. Niall Havern: A centre forward, Niall is like a bull on the field. Hard and aggressive his play does put the opponents defence in disarray. Limited to just 10 appearances and 2 goals, with the likes of Stitch ahead of him in the pecking order. Ronan Kinney: Signed from Warrenpoint mid-season this lad made his debut off the bench in a tight game against Ashgrove Rovers blasting 2 goals in 7 minutes. Ronan is pacey, skilful and a true pro when it comes to football. Looking forward to having him for a full season. He will guarantee goals and quality in the middle or up front. Made 10 appearances and scored 10 goals. Chris Mc Neil: The big lad moved to Newry from Coleraine mid-season. Known as an old fashioned centre forward, Chris quickly gelled with his new team mates on and off the field. But with Stitch and Hilly having banged in goals all season Chris was limited to few chances to show his ability. Big season ahead for him and we think we may just have a secret gem here. Made 9 appearances and scored 5 goals. Philip Mc Nally: Joined us 10 games or so into the season. A very useful part of the defence and every time he entered the field of play, Philip worked tirelessly for the team and helped us to secure the league title in our first season. Having spent the last few months in Australia, Philip made just 8 appearances. But word is he will be back shortly and ready for another season with OCFC. Sean Mc Cabe: This lad had the potential to be Player of the Year from the first game. His no nonsense defending fused with his deadly forward runs were a pleasure to watch. Sean is a class act, but unfortunately Sean suffered a serious injury at training and this has kept him out of football since. We all wish him a full recovery and will be great to see him back on the pitch for whoever he chooses in the future. Made 8 appearances. David Henry: Horribly he was the first casualty for OCFC when he suffered a horrible double leg break against Ashgrove on Frank Curran Pk. Just a freak accident as he went up for a header and landed wrongly on his ankle. All at OCFC wish David a speedy recovery and hope to see him back playing in the very near future. Made 2 appearances. There was several other players who started the season with OCFC, but for various reasons they moved onto other clubs. We would like to thank them all for their contribution to our first season.
