Organic foods represents one of the most dynamic agricultural sectors in Mexico. It has grown by 15% per year over a 20-year period to total MXN 8.90bn (USD 689m) in 2012. Mexico is also ranked fifteenth in the world for organic agricultural production. The dynamism of the sector is almost exclusively linked to foreign trade. About 83% of organic products are exported. They are destined for the US, followed by Europe. They generate around USD 400m in foreign currency revenues, according to the Secretariat of Agriculture in Mexico (Sagarpa). Between 1996 and 2012, the amount of land dedicated to organic products grew by 22% to 512,250 hectares. A total of 50% of this land was dedicated to coffee, 10% to aromatic and medicinal herbs, 8% to vegetables, 6% to cocoa and 4% to wild grape. Over the same period, the number of organic products has grown at an annual rate of 17%. In 2012, there were more than 170,000 producers, of which 90% were small-scale producers that have less than 3 hectares, and 10% were mid-scale. Non have more than 200 hectares.
