Organized Recreational Sports May not be Enough Parents often associate children’s physical activity with playing recreational team sports. Practices and games are usually fun for children who like the sports in which they participate, but recreational sports do not offer all of the activity that children need. Organized team sports are certainly fun; they have physical and social benefits, and the activities can boost self-esteem. Still, many younger children do not get enough activity when parents simply drop them off for practice. Encouraging a child’s activity only during times of organized team sports presents several problems. First, some children play only one sport every year. Without other activities, the one-sport child would play only during that sport’s season. For children under the age of twelve, most sports’ seasons last for about three months out of the year. Children who spend the rest of the year without physical activity will lose the healthy benefits of that sport. Furthermore, as these children grow older, they will not be as adept at the sport they loved as much as more active children who play other sports and who spend the rest of year active with their families.
