Organizers have been put in a really precarious position that I dont envy a bit. We all want a blockade-- there is no disagreement there! The Arab and Palestinian community should take the lead here, and the relationships they are building with each other and with various organizations of workers and activists to build for a successful campaign should take precedent over our desire to act on this right now. I really hope people can respect this decision. It was not made unilaterally, but was a compromise to build for something bigger and better. Are we all bummed? Yep, everybody on every side. Should we tear apart AROC and other organizers as they try to deal with an incredibly difficult situation? No! I agree with a lot of folks that people should demonstrate-- I just think they should do it in a way that strengthens our community and honors the leadership of the Arab/Palestinian American community. So what that means here is demonstrating on another date in a more strategic way. The coalition of organizers isnt an authority to rise up against. We need to rise up together against Israeli occupation and violence for sustained effort that is successful beyond one day. What AROC and coalition are asking us to do is to view success differently. Right now its up to us to listen to the Palestinian American/Immigrant community define what success means to them. Lets assume the best intentions and best efforts of organizers involved. Please. I genuinely believe that the people doing work for this action, regardless of mistakes they did or didnt make, came to the work trying to do the right thing and do their best work, and I admire the passion people brought with them. Instead of freaking out, trashing each other, or acting unilaterally ourselves, I hope we can sit back and try to learn from each other on this one, appreciate each others strengths and learn from each others weaknesses and be better for it so we can attack harder next time.
