Orion contributing editor Sandra Steingraber and 9 others were arrested yesterday for blockading the site of a proposed underground storage facility for fracked gas in New York. After declaring it a dangerous project, she told the reporter, “We hope that by showing the depth of our resistance, we can shine a spotlight on this menace in our community. This is just the first step in an enduring campaign.” Orion readers will recall that she was also arrested at this site in March 2013 and served 10 days in jail, which she wrote about powerfully in the Sept/Oct 2013 issue, Coffee in Jail (is.gd/GTDfmA). The project was recently approved, though, despite the evidence that such projects in salt caverns can never be safe. Thanks, Sandra and all, for another principled stand.
