Orpheus sings hymn to Hermes who fell in a river and drowned. Translated from the original Orphic Hymn to Hermes. Long after dark falls, sitting on stream stone and staring in faceless water that flows without cease, Orpheus sings enchanting tune with hot tears that stream down his trembling cheeks, while body of his father unseen floats lifeless on river waves into swirling sea. "Come back and hear my sad lament, Hermes, quick messenger of Dios, and son of Maia. Master of mortals with all-powerful heart, you lead us in contests, playing games of wits in cheerful laughter, and teach us to seek and observe life with ever-changing wiles. Leaping swift through woods in your winged sandals, you killed angry Argos, and freed our land from oppressors, for you are friend of men, and teach mortal prophets magic of speech, prize-winner rejoicing in deceitful tricks. Trickster who teaches people how to think, you nourish all, presiding over gain in changing growth of business with gold coins, and drive fearful cares away with kind words when your strong hand wields blameless wand of peace to solve social problems when people fight. Blessed Korykian, your aid brings men luck when your counsel guides them through changing life, helping them work to gain profit in need when you show them how to manage constraints with weapon of your tongue which men revere. Hear my request, and guide my footsteps well on fearful road of life so I achieve prosperous goal, and end my life in peace. Give my speech grace, and my hands rich success, so when I arrive at my day of death my heart will sing with memories of love." Orpheus bows his head, as sunset glows burning red on mountains, and bids farewell to his cheerful father whose laughter echoes from rippling rivers that will never cease.
