Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison today for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. It is likely that he will serve less than half of that, and he will not be going to a regular prison, seeing as he is a rich, famous, privileged white male. To add insult to injury a book is being prepared about his experience, which will no doubt go on to sell millions of copies worldwide. I am not alone in thinking this is absolutely disgusting, and a complete insult to the memory, life, friends and family of Reeva. It also sends an appalling message to the female community in South Africa. South Africa is home to one of the world’s highest rates of what is called “intimate femicide” – the killing of a woman by her partner. In South Africa, it is the leading cause of unnatural death among women.
