"Osceola County and the city of Kissimmee want to clean up more than just the shoreline of Lake Tohopekaliga, they want to make the lake sparkle. But, they need the help of some dedicated volunteers. Lake Appreciation Day on July 20 will feature a complete clean up of Lake Toho. With 55 volunteers already set to pick up trash off of the shore, Jennifer Nicholson, assistant director of Kissimmee Public Works and Engineering, said that they need more people to clean the lake itself. Trash often ends up within the currents of the lake, and it also is an area that city and county staff can’t always get to. Boaters will be able to reach areas all across the lake. Those in canoes and kayaks will be along the seawall at Kissimmee Lakefront Park, picking up litter that washed up against it and can’t be reached from land. Those with motorized boats will go out farther in the lake, cleaning up the water around Goblets Cove, Makinson Island and the mouth of Shingle Creek. In-lake volunteers are being asked to provide their own boats, but the city of Kissimmee will provide canoes to the first 40 volunteers who do not have their own vessel, as well as gloves, vests and a waterproof picker. The only requirement is that the volunteers must be 18 or older to paddle in the canoes or can paddle with a parent if they are at least 13."
