Osteosarcoma is the most common type of cancer that starts in the - TopicsExpress

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of cancer that starts in the bone. Even though this cancer starts in the cells that make bone, the cancer-filled bone is not as strong as normal bones. Most osteosarcomas occur in children and teens, but they can occur at any age. Osteosarcoma often starts near the ends of the long bones in the legs, especially around the knee. The arm bone near the shoulder is the next most common place. But it can start in other bones, too, like the hip bone (pelvis), shoulder, or jaw. (Taken from the American Cancer Society Website). According to Dr. Gibbs, Ansleys surgeon, osteosarcoma is very rare with only about 900 new cases being diagnosed in the U. S. every year. Dr. Gibbs is an awesome surgeon and a researcher of sarcomas. However, at the Memorial where Ansley receives chemo, there are two other girls with osteosarcoma in the humerus. We live within two counties of both of them. There has to be a CURE! Please keep in mind that osteosarcoma is but one of many childhood cancers. We have met so many families along the way who have made our journey easier and enriched our lives. I hope that I have not offended anyone with the pictures. Ansley gave me permission to post them. I just have had so many ask what it is and what caused it. Right now, all we know is that it is a mutation in a cell that went wrong one day. We pray research can prevent this and CURE it and every cancer in the world. Ansley complained with pain on and off several months, but it was never enough to really prompt an XRAY. Hindsight is 20/20, and yes, it wish I had taken her in April when she first complained, but God has a reason. We are where we are for a reason. We will receive the pathology report of the tumor taken out in the next days. We pray that tumor was dead. Ansley will be admitted to Memorial next Friday to begin chemo again. The staff at Memorial are awesome and have become like family. We thank God for them. The protocol is for 20 more weeks. Dr. Gibbs said to me on Sept, 12, This is some nasty stuff. It is! Ansley has been through so much, but she will beat cancer with God and all of your continued prayers! Sorry so long-If you had any questions-I hope this helped clear them up!
