Osun gov poll: Ex-speaker, Liadi Tella, Lere Oyewumi, Olaseinde-Mustapha jostle to become Omisore’s deputyfont size Print Email18.Apr.2014WITH less than four months to the conduct of August 9 governorship poll in Osun State, there are indications that the struggle to choose the runningmate for the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has begun in earnest, as no fewer than four stalwarts of the party were being considered for the slot. The Nigerian Tribune gathered that thelist of the would-be deputy governor if Omisore wins the poll included former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Adejare Bello; Commissioner with the National Population Commission (NPC) in Osun State, Chief Lere Oyewumi; former Managing Editor of the defunct National Concord Newspaper, Alhaji Liadi Tella and Honourable (Mrs) Funmilayo Olaseinde-Mustapha.Credible source informed the Nigerian Tribune that top hierarchy of the party and PDP Elders’ Forum in Osun State might have zeroed in on these politicians after careful considerations of their individual pedigrees and the need to cool frayed nerves and pacify some camps, following its recently conducted governorship primaries.Nigerian Tribune also gathered that ex-Speaker, Mr Bello, the Director-General of Senator Isiaka Adeleke Campain Organisation from Ede and a two-term Speaker in Osun State made the list, with calculated move to pacify Adeleke’s bloc, with a view to earn theircooperation and support ahead the poll. Both Chief Lere Oyewumi and Chief (Mrs) Olaseinde-Mustapha were council chairmen in Irewole and Ifedayo local government areas, respectively in the past. But Oyewumi, who is a commissioner in Osun NPC appears to have an edge among the shortlisted PDP chieftains. The group making the case for the candidacy of Chief Oyewumi, a commissioner, who was a former member of House of Representativesconsidered his closeness to the grass root and political sagacity as criteria which ought to earn the running mate ticket, coupled with the influence he wields in Osun West Senatorial District.Mrs Olaseinde-Mustapha, who spent a term in Osun State House of Assembly, representing Ifedayo State Constituency from Osun Central Senatorial District, was also being considered, considering what a source in the party identified as the need to ensure gender equality.ADVERTISEMENTWhen contacted, Omisore’s Director of Media and Strategy, Mr Diran Odeyemi, hinted that the PDP Elders’ Forum and the State Working Committee were handling the matter, assuring that the process would not cause any crisis within the party.
