Oswald Manuel Arnold Gottfried Spengler (1880 –1936) wrote his best knowned book, The Decline of the West (Der Untergang des Abendlandes), published in 1918, which puts forth a cyclical theory of the rise and decline of civilizations. He developped a ciclic theory of cultures and civilizations, with a radical critic of the idea of progress, tended to determine morfologically the structure of the actual time, will take place from 1800 what will be projected till 2000/2200. In 1931, he published Man and Technics, which warned against the dangers of technology and industrialism to culture, on a strong pessimistic view. The perspectives of the historic decline of the Western Civilization, made by Spengler, are too much evident nowadays, and there are many symptoms of the organic PHILOSPHY OF HISTORY AND HYPERMODERNITY Carlos A. Gomes degenerescence of the western culture. Life, nuclear word underlying the idea of the pos-Modernity, which caracterizes a new physiognomy of the modern western societies, was marked with failure and rupture of the big utopies, developing a new individualistic culture, based on ‘present’. The present time is named hypermodernity, and it’s dominated by a democrat system which privileges individual autonomy, consumptionism and hedonism. Spengler asserts that democracy is simply the political weapon of money, and the media is the means through which money operates a democratic political system. The thorough penetration of moneys power throughout a society is yet another marker of the shift from Culture to Civilization. (vide filcarlos)
