Our 4th Annual Tom Skilling Weather Day in which we team with Walgreens, Midland Radio, the National Weather Service-Chicago and emergency response agencies to promote and sell NOAA Weather Radios at a discounted price is coming up in just over a week. Were going to be in Naperville this year. Please come by! Plan to join us Saturday, May 31 from 11am to 2pm at the Walgreens in Naperville at 612 Raymond Drive (on the corner of Raymond Drive and Ogden Avenue) in Naperville. We have quite an event planned. Midland NOAA radios will be on sale at Walgreens with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross (the remainder cover the costs of producing the radios). On hand will be my meteorological colleagues Kevin Birk and Amy Seeley from the National Weather Service-Chicago Forecast Office who will help you set up the radios so they respond to watches and warning issued for your specific location. These radios are potential life-savers! They can be put into a stand-by mode and activate when tornado or other severe weather watches and warnings are issued for your area--even in the middle of the night as you sleep. They permit monitoring of the Weather Services 24 hour radio broadcasts. Come by and see a working WeatherBug weather station, like those we air on WGN. On hand will be Ben Michalak from WeatherBug to show you how one of these stations works. On hand with their Interactive Public Education Unit will be reps from the DuPage County Dept of Homeland Security and from the Naperville Community Response Team---among the amazing folks who are the areas first-responders in weather emergencies.
