Seriously? Who would have thought that cannabis is in the running for one of the hottest 2015 crowdfunding trends? medical marijuana crowdfunding marijuana crowdfunding Marijuana Crowdfunding A Fast Emerging Industry to Watch In 2015 medical marijuana crowdfundingThat’s right. Medical marijuana projects & cannabis related businesses have been starting to hit the crowdfunding scene and the niche is growing at a rapid pace. Now more than ever, people who suffer from debilitating and often life-threatening conditions and diseases such as epilepsy, cancer, spinal chord injuries, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and even PTSD, now have a legal means to raise money needed through crowdfunding to pay for their marijuana, State medical marijuana cards, travel expenses associated with their medical care and other medical expenses. Traditional therapies and drug cocktails do provide some benefit to those suffering from these conditions and diseases, but at a price. Many people have problems with drug interactions, severe side-effects, increased dosages, as well as certain treatments failing to work. For some people, the only true relief they get from their symptoms comes in the form of medical marijuana. Until recently, more than 80% of cannabis business owners relied solely on their own savings and credit cards to launch their operations due to the fact that loans from banks are pretty much non-existent for businesses who are associated with marijuana. Investments were once equally hard to come by. However, at the time of writing this, medical marijuana is not legal in all 50 states. Currently, there are 23 states that have passed legislation legalizing medical marijuana on the state level but marijuana is still illegal under federal law. For the states that are still undecided as to which side of the debate they wish to remain, Colorado has a very convincing argument as to one benefit of legalizing medical marijuana – money (and LOTS of it). At the end of last year, Colorado legalized the sale of marijuana not only for medical use, but recreational use. The state collected $3.5 million in incremental taxes in just the month of January alone. That’s an average of $42 million a year. Needless to say, this hasn’t gone unnoticed by other states. Most states will inevitably follow suit, it’s really just a question of “when” rather than “if”. Some states have also been paying very close attention to crowdfunding. “Intrastate” crowdfunding to be exact. A state can enact their own legislation making an exemption for “intrastate” crowdfunding. (The person or business seeking funding and the investor reside in the same state.) There are currently 12 states that have crowdfunding laws in the books. Out of those 12 states, 6 of them, (CO, ME, MD, MI, WA, and WI), have legalized medical marijuana. These 6 states are the leaders – the forward-thinkers – the groundbreakers – the mavericks. Not only have they passed legislation to encourage crowdfunding, they passed legislation to legalize the growth and sale of marijuana for medical purposes. It’s a win-win situation for these states. This forward-thinking spawned a whole new niche for crowdfunding – medical marijuana – and the platforms that cater to this new niche. Currently, some of the top marijuana crowdfunding platforms of interest are: Cannafundr Cannafundr marijuana crowdfunding marijuana crowdfunding Marijuana Crowdfunding A Fast Emerging Industry to Watch In 2015 cannafundr logo transparentCannafundr is owned and operated by CrowdFund Connect, Inc., an industry leader in the development and management of crowdfunding sites. What’s also great about Cannafundr is there are zero fees for those listing cannabis related companies seeking to raise capital and there are no membership fees for investors either. Currently, all campaigns are in support of PotCoin. Once the currency reaches an acceptable rate, other campaigns will be considered whether directly related to PotCoin or not. Both founders were also voted in as honorable Snoop Dogg prize-receivers. Their platform & community is already beginning to thrive and grow more each day. To date, 34 companies have raised over $17M using this platform. They are one of the premier hubs for cannabis related investments. They also have a legal marijuana markets report available titled The State of Legal Marijuana Markets 2nd & 3rd Edition which contains comprehensive information and a high-level analysis of current business trends for the industry. CannaDabbaDoo Cannadabbadoo marijuana crowdfunding Marijuana Crowdfunding A Fast Emerging Industry to Watch In 2015 cannadabbadoo logo transparentThe CannaDabbaDoo cannabis related crowdfunding platform was launched by Cheryl Shuman and Aimee Shuman and is an entity of the Beverly Hills Cannabis Club. Their site already has a whopping 100,000+ projects which have been listed, raising more than $1.1M in pledges in numerous different categories such as agriculture, arts, cannabusiness, charities, marijuana dispensaries and grows to name just a few. Conclusion Some experts anticipate that 26 states will legalize medical marijuana before the end of 2014 alone and it’s inevitable that the number of states following suit will only increase in 2015. It will be interesting to see the role that cannabis crowdfunding sites will play going forward in this rapidly emerging industry in 2015 and beyond. Some experts even claim that in just a matter of a few years the cannabis industry will surpass the beer industry in worth which in the United States alone currently generates over a whopping $90 billion annually. Next year legal marijuana sales will easily more than double and although only now in its infancy the industry is already on the radar of many crowdfund investors and crowdfunding industry trend watchers worldwide. This industry is going to be massive! Just how big will it grow? Well only time will tell but it’s not far fetched to say that we’ve barely even scratched the surface of how much cannabis and crowdfunding will transform the investment world of 2015 and beyond and that the list of marijuana crowdfunding sites above are just the 1st few of many to come!
