Our Edge: The Anointing Of The Holy Spirit Luke 4:18: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, A lot of people try to do a lot of things in their own might and power and a lot of them end up burned out, discouraged, and weary—but not those who are anointed by the Spirit of God. Biblical anointing is also called "being sanctified" or "being set apart for a specific task appointed by the Lord." Primarily, anointing of persons or objects is for sacred purposes, or as initiation for a royal or a holy office. A person, place, or object anointed by God is sacred unto the Lord. It cannot serve other purposes than what is acceptable and pleasing to God or it will be cursed as The Word teaches us. Anointing is also for appropriation. When a Christian is called to a new responsibility, he needs to be more than ready for it. And when God calls, He qualifies, He equips, and He prepares. We who profess to be saved just simply need to yield or surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit of God for this anointing. If called to a new task, you and I have to choose several hours to get alone with God. To plead with Him to anoint us or to equip us for the job to which God has called each of us to stay, to excel, and be faithful. This should be done before taking on the new role: by a new parent while the child is still in the womb, a new bride and a new groom as they look forward to wedding day, a new pastor before he is ordained, a new song director, a new choir director, a new Sunday school teacher, a new driver, a new usher, a new choir member, a new preacher, a new missionary. Anointing is like God giving His mind, His blessing, His power upon us for that duty or position. It is a little private ordination service. It is a private inauguration between God and you. Without the anointing of the Holy Spirit we cannot serve God right regardless of how much sacrifice or effort you put into it. Without the anointing of the Holy Spirit everything would only amount to nothing. There is no power and no blessings in what we do without God setting us apart and without Him appropriating us to fulfill what we ought to fulfill. Church, remember that the results of what you do daily, regardless of its size, only speak of whether or not you, first and foremost, have come for the Anointing of the Spirit of the Lord.
