Our Great Brit this week is Terry Gilliam :) Terence Vance Terry Gilliam is an American-born British screenwriter, film director, animator, actor and member of the Monty Python comedy troupe. Gilliam has directed several films, including Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Terry Gilliams The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. The only Python not born in Britain, he became a naturalised British citizen in 1968. In 2006, he formally renounced his American citizenship. Nicknamed Captain Chaos because of all the things that have gone wrong on his film sets (It isn’t really that. Between me and the actors, or between me and the director of photography, it’s more like, “Oh, what if we did that? Okay, we can do that.” So the organised people think it’s chaos, but it’s not), Gilliam first became known for the bizarre animation sequences in Monty Pythons Flying Circus, using cutout pictures and photographs. During the filming of Brazil, he became so stressed that he temporarily lost the use of his legs, which only returned to normal several weeks later. He has been off and on to write and direct a movie adaptation of Alan Moores Watchmen. Gilliam has said he attempted to write an accurate screenplay but it would be unfilmable, but he would consider directing it if it were made into 10 or 12-part cable television series. His latest film, The Zero Theorem, starring Quentin Tarantino favourite Christoph Waltz, is about a computer hacker whose goal is to discover the reason for human existence, but continually finds his work interrupted thanks to Management: they keep sending a teenager and lusty love interest to distract him.
