Our Inspectors do a lot of pro active work in the Roodepoort area. Animal cruelty does not happen in the open so we have to go looking for it. Senior Inspector Taljaard and Trainee Inspector Mahube during a pro active stint in Soweto. They heard dogs barking and it came from a scrap yard a few meters away from where they were busy. The Inspectors enquired from the owner of the scrap yard if he had any dogs but he denied having any animals. With the barking continuing they decided to look around the property. On the property they found in total 11 dogs. The first place they checked was a tin shack. In the shack they found 5 teenage cross foxie dogs. As they opened the room the stench of ammonia and old faeces hit them. There was no ventilation, no water and the poor animals were living in their own mess. A few meters away in an enclosure made out of old wire and rubble they found 4 cross GSD. Not only were these dogs living in their own faeces with no water but they were chained up as well. After removing the dogs to the safety of the SPCA vehicles. The Inspectors walked past a scrap engine and they heard puppies whimpering. Under the engine they found a fox terrier mother and her new born puppies. These too were removed. Animal cruelty charges have been opened against the owner.
