Our Intentional God (05/13/14) Psalm 75:4-7 BUT GOD… Pride “I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up the horn; do not lift up your horn on high, do not speak with insolent pride.’” For not from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert comes exaltation; BUT GOD is the Judge; He puts down one and exalts another. (Psalm 75:4-7) What do the Scriptures say about pride? The LORD will tear down the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow (Proverbs 16:5). Then in James: “But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, ‘GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.’ Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” (4:6-10) APP: Pride, by its very nature, sets itself against the Truth. (And since God is Truth, then you’ve got a serious problem.) We think WE have the power and authority, and therefore speak and act as such. We believe others will see us as we perceive ourselves and receive such acknowledgement, which is our rightful due. Unfortunately, we are blind to the One Who can give us an honest perspective, and rather than making ourselves humble before Him, we instead will be humbled. Learn from the words of Jesus Christ: For the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great. (Luke 9:46) If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and the servant of all. (Mark 9:35) But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. (Matthew 23:11)
