Our New Years Eve I remember the excitement I felt as I was - TopicsExpress

Our New Years Eve I remember the excitement I felt as I was getting ready for the fun evening we had planned. Trying to decide what I wanted to wear and curling my hair with thoughts of dancing and frivolity. Purely reveling in the fact that we would be going out to celebrate the New Year for the first time in our married life. We were also going to be celebrating a dear family members birthday. I finished getting ready and we waited for our driver to arrive with thoughts of ringing in the New Year and celebrating a birthday. Rob and I stood by our back door anticipating her arrival. The plan was to be picked up at 9 then the other couple would be picked up and we would all head over to Averys. We kept checking the time and noticed it was after 9. I decided to text Tisha to see if their designated driver had arrived yet, not knowing at the time that we had chosen the same driver. She text me back and said yes their driver had picked them up and they were on their way. I didnt realize that they were on their way to pick us up as well. Then she text me and said they were almost to our house. We saw the lights coming so Rob and I stepped out our front door to meet them. Rob very kindly opened the car door for me and I slid in to the middle of the truck. Aaron was on my right Tisha was in the passenger seat and Rob was seated to my left. It was a very cold night but the inside of the truck was warm. Once we were all situated inside our driver Angie started off down the road to our chosen destination for the evenings celebrations. We were all laughing and having a good time. She told us she was prepared and that there was a puke bucket all ready if anyone required it. We all agreed that was not the plan. We were just wanting to have a few drinks Celebrate Aarons birthday, dance ,share stories from the week and have an enjoyable evening ringing in the New Year. One minute we were all talking and laughing and the next moment I realized my eyes had been closed and everything was strange. I opened my eyes and noticed I was halfway between the passenger and driver seat. I had heard a loud crash and a popping sound. Everything seemed so dark the air was full of what seemed like smoke but, it was the dust from the deployed airbags and suddenly I felt like I couldnt breath. I felt disoriented and all I could think of was I cant breath and get me out of this truck. I felt Rob reach for me then he hurried to get out of the truck. I then climbed out and when he saw me he asked if I was okay. I said yes in a trembling voice but I did not feel okay. I wondered where everyone else was and if Angie, Tisha, and Aaron were okay, was Rob okay?! It felt like I was in a bad dream and I just wanted to wake up. Rob went over to Angie immediately his nursing instincts had kicked in and he started assessing the situation. It seemed that Angie was much worse off then the rest of us. I just stood there in a daze feeling like I couldnt breath. My instincts kicked in and I started to do some meditative breathing because in that moment my hands started to shake a little and I felt like I was going to pass out. Two ambulances arrived swiftly and we were surrounded by policeman and paramedics. One of the policeman asked Rob if he was a witness or part of the accident. He said he was part of the accident and he was a nurse so they no longer questioned him and they stepped aside and let him do his thing. I remember standing there in a haze and I heard Rob yell stay the F@×$ on your side. Apparently the kid who hit us had climbed out of his truck and raised his hands up like what and was heading over to us. Rob didnt want him anywhere near us. The paramedics and police all took turns asking us questions. Simple questions like whats your name, date of birth and do you know where you are to make sure none of us were going into shock. Rob continued to help Angie, and a paramedic helped Tisha to the ambulance she was bleeding from her forehead. She looked pale. Aaron then came around to check on me as well. Once they were both in the ambulance the paramedic questioned me and told me I needed to get into the ambulance also. I asked where my husband was and he told me that he was still helping with Angie. He then took my arm and started to walk me to the ambulance he said it was too cold for me to be outside and they needed to assess me. He walked me up the steps to the inside and sat me down. I looked across at Tisha her hands were shaking she didnt look right. I told them you need to help her I think she is going into shock. Aaron put his arms around her and held her head. More paramedics took her vitals and made sure she was okay she looked like she was going to pass out. When it was my turn they helped me take off my coat and hoodie so they could check my vitals as we were on our way to the hospital. They couldnt get a reading on me. They asked if I hurt anywhere. I pointed to my left knee it hurt and all the way up my thigh did as well. My neck and shoulders on my left side my big toe on my right foot and my index finger on my left hand was very sore and beginning to swell. We arrived at the hospital and they proceeded to take my vitals again because we had stopped and they had to get a reading before they took me in. We would spend the next couple of hours in the ER. Everyone was very kind. One of the paramedics said well you look so pretty tonight. I thanked him and said yes...I am all dressed up for the hospital. At least we could laugh a little in that moment. Again I asked them where Rob was and they told me he was on the ambulance with Angie. I later found out he wasnt and they took her straight to Show low because she needed surgery right away. I received a call from Rob from a strange number. His phone had been found in the truck and someone brought it to me and asked if it was mine or Robs. I put it in my purse along with mine. When he called he told me he had been left there at the scene he was going to get a ride home to pick up our car and then come to the hospital. I was upset I thought that he had already been taken care of. A little bit later Rob showed up at the hospital and took turns going to each one of us to check on us. When the doctor came back to where I was I told him my husband was in the accident as well and he has not been assessed. They let me go into Robs room with him as they checked him over. We were all concerned because of his recent heart surgery. He told them his chest hurt and his knees. They immediately took him for x-rays. His chest was okay just painful because of his seat belt. His knees were banged up pretty good. His neck and shoulders were sore also. They kept us there for a bit to watch his blood pressure and blood sugar. Then we were released with some pain meds. Rob told Tisha and Aaron that we would drive them home because he had our car. We talked on the way to their house. We thought it was ironic that it happened and we had a designated driver. Our New year count down ended in our car in front on Tisha and Aarons home. We made it there with 3 minutes to spare just in time for a New Years Eve kiss. Rob and I drove home and did not get to sleep until 5 a.m. We are all in a lot of pain. For me it is more than I have ever experienced in saying that though it makes me feel a little sad because I know mine is nothing compared to what Rob experienced with surgery and what Angie is currently experiencing. I thank God that we were not hurt worse than we were. Under different circumstances we could have been. My prayers and Love go out to all who were involved especially Angie and her family. Also to all the police and paramedics that were so quick to the scene of the accident and so kind.
