Our Prophet (saw) said, Traveling is a type (or a part) of punishment. This is so true! A person is deprived of family, environment, regular comfort, and routine. Sleep patterns are disrupted, strange experiences occur, much discomfort is endured, and at times a traveler is subject to danger. All of this makes one appreciate the blessings of family, home, friends, community and routine. While we are at home, we daydream of breaking away from the monotony of our daily life, but in reality that monotony also has its comfort that we often overlook. In all of this alteration and patterns, Allah allows us to see the blessings of what we otherwise take for granted. PS This post is written at 2:40 am, in KL airport, after having left Langkawi at 8 pm to catch a one hour flight here, and enroute to a 7.5 hour flight to Doha, then a 3.5 hour layover, then a 14 hour flight to DC, then a 7 hour layover, then a 3 hour flight to Memphis. In total, I would have traveled half-way across the world, in around 40 hours, hotel to home. And while this is very tiring, it is also a blessing from Allah that He has allowed us to travel such massive distances in such short periods of time, in relative comfort (compared to previous generations!). As He says in the Quran He is the One who has caused you to be able to journey through the land and the seas... Yunus: 22.
