Our ancestors died so that we could vote. This is one of the - TopicsExpress

Our ancestors died so that we could vote. This is one of the laziest reasoning given for why people should vote. Nobody died in order to put his/ her children on the voters roll. If that was the case, whose voters roll would that be, of the colonial masters and their racist project? We are voting for the right to own land, to found and run businesses free of burdening red tape; businesses which do not exploit others to keep them in abject poverty. We are voting to determine the quality of health we must provide for ourselves, the quality of education we must have, the quality of work life we must have, free from prejudice and racial injustice. We are voting to determine the laws and regulations... to build this nation. Our ancestors died so that we could remove colonial shackles - through mental emancipation and through economic emancipation; to deny tyranny and corruption. In 1994, the choice to do this lied between open revolt (revolution) and ballot (voting). CODESA chose ballot. Which is what has led us to where we are. Some of us are happy, some arent. So when I vote, I will be voting to carry that project forward. I will be voting for the self-determination of the people, free from racial and other forms of oppression. I will be voting for the policies which I can live with, and debate, and review, on daily basis; not those which I can change or defend once every 5 years. I will be voting for human freedom, now.
