Our congregation in Roswell (UUMAN) has adopted an anti-gun violence platform, and we have been furiously lobbying the GA legislature to oppose a horrendous pro-gun bill (HB 60) that would allow concealed carry in churches, public schools and bars and would also expand GAs Stand Your Ground law. This bill is popular with a lot of legislators and may more than likely pass, so we are asking the UU community to get involved and fax, e-mail and call your state senator to ask them to oppose HB 60. Here is a letter I faxed and e-mailed to my state senator, if anyone would like to use it as a template: Senator Murphy, Since the House decided to maneuver around the Senate committee process and alter HB 875 and attach most of it to HB 60, I am writing to ask you to please vote NO on HB 60. It is obvious from the public outcry over HB 875 that the people of Georgia are not in favor of this guns everywhere bill. The fact that the House would seek to circumvent the democratic process by sneaking most of HB 875 on to HB 60 speaks not only to the disrespect some legislators have for the will of Georgias citizens, but also to their allegiance to private, corporate interests at the expense of the people, which is an abhorrent affront to our freedom. I understand that you have an A+ rating from the NRA and are also involved with Georgia Carry, but I would remind you that you do not work for those special interests, you work for the people, and a majority of us are opposed to this horrendous gun bill.
