Our country is divided because we have forgotten what is the type of freedom that the Founders offered to us. Some collapse that freedom into the idea of security from want. Roosevelt once said that a poor and hungry man is not free because he lacks basic resources. I say that he misunderstood freedom entirely but that is the freedom some continue to proclaim: freedom from engagement, freedom to become well-fed wards of the state. A freedom that guarantees equal results even if the equalization mirage comes at the cost of the freedom of others. Others who call themselves conservatives are perfectly content with administering a mammoth of government and give it a slight trim once in a while. So consumed they are with a desire to win, they rescind of principle if it means gaining power. Even another group proclaim a freedom that collapses everything into individualistic atomism. Even the very existence of government is seen as an imposition. I think that all these extremes are closely related and all miss the point of freedom.
