Our course reached Jodhpur, in January 1970 to fly Harvards/Texan T6G at the Air Force Flying College. During cockpit familiarisation most of us were in intrigued by a face-mask in the rear cockpit of the aircraft. For flying we had to carry our cloth inner helmet with R/T mask attached to it. The additional face mask attached to the bottom of the cockpit by a corrugated rubber pipe foxed us. The smarter lot soon figured out the fitting and it’s purpose, but some of the simple souls actually put it to their face and tried to communicate with the outside world. Everyone learned. Subsequently while going to the flights in the afternoon, we used lower our heads and pedal our bicyles furiously to reach some sheltered space as soon as we spotted a Harvard likely to pass overhead. Getting kicked from behind by the angry instructors was bad enough! Who wanted to get drenched as well?
