Our final submission comes from the Dalhousie Cult Classics - TopicsExpress

Our final submission comes from the Dalhousie Cult Classics Club! Dear DSU, I am writing on behalf of the Dalhousie Cult Classics Club. We are a small society at Dal with a group of students who both regularly and intermittently come to our weekly meetings. We are one of the few societies on campus that operates solely for social means, providing an environment for students to meet other students with similar interests, and simply relax and take in a good movie when they wish to. As our society is small and our events quite simple, we require very little from the DSU. In regards to your proposed renovations, I do not think we will benefit from the majority of them, however I understand that a large number of societies may. I do think though that perhaps there should be a greater focus on private meeting rooms, even if only a glass wall separates each room. This would provide a quieter and less distracting environment for multiple societies to meet at once, allowing them to not have to fight over each other to be heard. The one thing that I do feel our society would benefit greatly from is the society storage cages. We do not have many supplies as a society, mainly they include our society fair poster and decorations, and our projector. However each week one of our members must bring the projector to and from the SUB so that we can watch our film, so having a cage to store it in would be wonderful. The only issue with this however would be that we (and I believe other societies) would need access to these cages during the evenings, when many society meetings take place. If this could be allowed though, I think the society storage cages are one of the best new proposed changes to the SUB. I do have an important complaint about your current allocation of funds however. In the beginning of November I received an email from the DSU stating that they had run out of funding for fall semester society grants. For greater ease and lessened paperwork, many societies wait until the end of the semester to submit their grant request with all of their receipts together. Receiving this news when the semester was hardly more than half over was extremely upsetting. It placed stress and financial strain on my society for the rest of the semester, and we are a small society with little spending! I cannot imagine the impact it might have had on larger societies. This is my second year as the president of my society, and I have never heard of the DSU running out of grant funds. I find it quite shocking that such an occurrence would happen while the DSU is currently moving forward with a $10 million renovation plan, especially when a large portion of the renovations are simply to make offices into new offices, instead of creating new services somewhere across campus or sufficiently supporting the current societies at Dal. I would just like to say thank you for taking our considerations and suggestions into account, our society greatly appreciates it. Having such an open discourse about DSU matters is an excellent decision that we regard highly. Thank you, Nicole Snowball Dalhousie Cult Classics Club
