Our first stop on the cruise was in Juneau on Sunday. I was excited because I had booked a Fly Away Fly Fishing excursion. Bonnie had booked a nature excursion, and the excursion company had changed it to a boating/whale watching trip, which she wasnt that interested in. So, we cancelled it and booked her a different trip- shell have to describe it. It was nasty and raining when we got off of the ship. Bonnies excursion left before mine did, so I left the ship when she did, and we waited. Hers went on schedule, and she left. I was pretty sure mine would be cancelled because of weather, but I waited. Sure enough, they showed up and said that the weather was too rotten to fly. One girl who had signed up for it got pretty upset, saying that shed fly fished in much worse weather than that. I said It aint the fishing, its the flying, and if they say its too bad, I believe them. Wasnt hard to believe. Of course, within 5 minutes of the trip being cancelled, the weather started clearing. So, I took off into Juneau to do some shopping. I bought Bonnie and I each a shirt, found one geocache and got information for an earthcache, then went back to the ship. I went back to our cabin and sat on the balcony looking out. I watched a bald eagle land about 200 yards away and watched him for a long time. I heard voices on the balcony next to ours- the one on the other side of the vindow vasher. I had seen stewards on that balcony occasionally, and had figured out that it was unoccupied. I looked up and there were two guys in coveralls, obviously maintenance guys rather than stewards, looking at the vindow vasher and talking. One looked at me and said hello, then he tapped the contraption with his hand and I heard him say Were done here. They left. I went out into the corridor and found them leaving, and asked Arent you going to move that thing? He said We cant. Then Oh, did you want it moved? I said Hell yes. Thats why I complained about it. He said Well, Ill tell Davy. Then, I went and examined it more closely. It had a lockout/tagout tag on it (see the picture). Lockout/tagout is an industrial safety program with strict rules. Once something has been tagged out, it is deemed unsafe and unusable until it is repaired and a mountain of paperwork is complete. In general, the only person who can remove the tag is the person who tagged it. The vindow vasher had been tagged out on August 15, three weeks prior to our boarding. Why it was tagged out at that location, by a Concierge Class balcony, rather than moving it to a location out of the way, is beyond me. Surely someone else had complained. Surely Celebrity knew it was a problem. Pissed me off, but I knew it vas NOT going to be moved. Bonnie came back after her excursion. Shed had a good time. I showed her the eagle, who by that time had been joined by another. Of course, she was sympathetic about my fly fishing trip being cancelled, but she liked the shirt I bought her. We decided to leave the ship again and do some shopping together, since Bonnie had an address for a yarn shop in town. So, we did, and I took a couple of pictures of her there. Bonnie has a thing about yarn shops, and I try to get pictures of her in yarn shops where ever we go. While she was yarn shopping, I went to the Alaska Brewing Company gift shop and bought a T-shirt and some coasters. We had a good time, like always.
