Our friend and ally human rights activist and defender Maryam Al Khawaja was stopped and detained in the Bahrain airport on Saturday morning - humanrightsfirst.org/press-release/us-government-should-speak-out-against-detention-bahrain-human-rights-defender-maryam. She is understood to be facing charges for her part in a campaign accusing prominent members of the Bahrain government of human rights violations, another charge of insulting the king of Bahrain on social media, and a third of assaulting a police officer apparently in connection with the confiscation of Maryams phone at the airport. In recent weeks, Bahrain also denied entry to Human Rights Firsts Brian Dooley and Congressman James McGovern, (humanrightsfirst.org/blog/state-department-responds-bahrains-denial-access-rep-mcgovern-and-human-rights-first). When is the U.S. government going to take a stand to support human rights and the defenders that fight for them in Bahrain?
