Our friends at the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (avlf.org) is one of the largest providers of free legal services to low-income Atlantans, providing volunteer lawyers for families facing many of the issues depicted in the inaugural film for their film series, American Winter. A natural and important extension of AVLF’s work is promoting a deeper understanding of the lives of those families and the challenges they face—e.g., families facing eviction after losing a job or not getting paid what was due, and families forced to live under deplorable conditions. To that end, AVLF decided to start a dialogue—with film as the touchstone—about poverty in America, poverty in Atlanta, and the barriers it creates for too many of our neighbors. I hope you will be able to join AVLF for a screening of the award-winning documentary American Winter, a film that does an amazing job of dispelling stereotypes about who makes up the ranks of the poor in our country and how they got there. The guest speakers will be Harry Gantz, the Emmy award-winning director of American Winter; Bill Bolling, Executive Director of the Atlanta Community Food Bank; Melissa Johnson, Policy Analyst, Georgia Budget & Policy Institute; and Cole Thaler, Director of Housing and Consumer Program, AVLF.
