Our good friend of nearly 40 years ... Larry E. Greeson, 1945-2014, age 68, long-time Oxford resident and Professor Emeritus at Miami University, died at sunrise on Sunday, July 13, 2014 in his new Venice, FL home. He called his newly purchased residence “idyllic” because it was surrounded by Mother Nature’s beautiful creations. Known for his kind personality, Larry had genuine interest in others. He cared about people and touched many lives as a Professor of Educational Psychology for over 35 years. Larry was on the cutting edge of student-centered learning long before it came to the forefront of contemporary methods. As a scholar, he continually researched teaching and learning techniques for the betterment of the student experience. While on sabbatical at the University of Bergen, Norway, Larry interacted with international scholars sharing various approaches to effective education. During his career, he authored many papers and produced a film entitle We Want Them to be Safe, which explored student centered learning in Norway and ran on local public television. Larry was passionate about family, nature, photography, travel, and basketball. He loved competition on the hardwood, rarely missing frequent games with “the guys”. A yet-to-be published book manuscript entitled Hoop Dialogues: Conversation on Basketball, Culture and Race was a longtime project involving interviews with people from all walks of life. The common thread among them was their love of the game and how that connection brought about diverse, ongoing relationships. Larry was a devoted father. His children hold him as their best friend. His guidance, encouragement and caring provided a solid foundation and safe haven for them. Larry asked Marilyn to the Prom 52 years ago. The years since have been filled with countless experiences, adventures and memories. Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; three children, Jeff (Johanna) of Philadelphia, PA; Erin of New Orleans, LA; and Jenny of Orlando, FL; brother Jerry (Joyce) of Culver, IN; brother Terry of Highland, IN; and numerous loving relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life gathering is being planned for a later date to be announced.
