Our hearts are breaking today as we say farewell to our Missy - TopicsExpress

Our hearts are breaking today as we say farewell to our Missy girl. Missy was somewhere between 18 and 20 years old. I first saw Missy at the side of the road at a rest area on the way to Melrose, NM where we then lived. She was patiently waiting for her owners to come and get her. It was July and very hot and I thought surely her owners would be back for her but they never returned. After three days of seeing her sitting out in the heat I stopped and brought her home. Missy was a beautiful dog, with a thick red coat and soft brown eyes. Loyal, smart and fast she loved to play in her younger days. As age crept up on her she slowed down but still would have the occasional mad dash around the yard. Even as her hips deteriorated she would surprise us every now and then by running up to us from around the corner of the house. The last few months of 2014 we realized that Missy was not right, she started to walk only to the left and eventually was walking in small circles. We deliberated as to if we were doing the right thing to keep her alive, but she was so determined to get up, get moving and to keep going that we didnt feel the time was right to end her life. This weekend though the circling became more intense and Missy was no longer able to get up on her own. She was frustrated and distressed and we knew the time had come to say goodbye. With the help of Dr. Hudson from All Pets Animal Hospital, Missy passed away gracefully and peacefully this morning. Her buddy Tripster is mourning her loss, we have placed Missy in her bed for a while so that Tripster can acknowledge her passing. As I write this he is lying in front of her bed. We thank Dr. Hudson and the staff at All Pets Animal Hospital for their care of Missy over the years and their kindness and compassion for us this morning as we said goodbye to our beautiful girl We understand how lucky we are to have experienced such a long and loving relationship with Missy. Missy was one tough and determined girl. I never imagined that day when I picked her up that she would be with me for 18 plus years. I hope the time Missy had with us made up for the heartache she felt when she was abandoned on the roadside all those years ago. Rest peacefully now my sweet girl. I will love you always.
