Our latest litter is now 4 weeks old and today was their first outing outside of the house or their puppy pen..it was also their first chance to practice their early imprinting in the big wide world (the agility yard). Todays session was designed to psychologically challenge them and continued into the dark of night in order to produce mild stress and to teach them how to use stress in a positive manner. Tonight included nosework games, introduction to markers, stress recovery and problem solving skills development. Each puppy was individually tested on each activity without the presence of their mum or other littermates for support in order to obtain accurate results. I believe strongly that nosework skills, focus, problem solving and stress management skills must be introduced prior to beginning drive building or grip exercises...This assists in avoiding hectic, over reactive and overly visual puppies which struggle in stressful environments, struggle with nosework and struggle with transitioning between exercises. Too many people confuse a crazy hectic puppy as being drivey....However, its no good having tonnes of drive if the dog cannot think clearly and RESPOND to situations as opposed to merely REACTING. A wild canine does not blindly chase every prey...it is calm, focused and clear in its actions...as should be the law enforcement K9...My puppy development program is methodical, carefully planned and designed to give the puppy as many of these important skills prior to leaving our kennels.***Only small portions of sessions are put onto public video for viewing***
