Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. From the 16th Century forward, blood flowed in battles of racial supremacy. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its Indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it. --excerpt from Why We Cant Wait, Dr. Martin Luther King, 1964-- I dance because it is important to me that dance celebrates some of the beauty and power of we, the American indian. We dance to prepare ourselves psychologically for the big tasks ahead, the long walk ahead. We dance because through it we pass stories down to our children. We dance because through it we identify ourselves to all others a people: we identify to others a way. We dance to honor the Mother, and we dance to honor the Father. We dance to live as ourselves. We dance to be free. Today, this Monday, I dance. My most honored tribute today comes through the black music called House Music. Black people bequeathed through their powerful cultures and mass creativity a form of music the world today all celebrate through. We, you and I, are very lucky to live in these modern times. To share these riches and these emotions, I am a very rich man indeed.
