Our new project #LivesOfWW1 went live yesterday and we want to say - TopicsExpress

Our new project #LivesOfWW1 went live yesterday and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone thats visited the platform, joined as a member, shouted about the project online or told their friends, the support weve seen has been incredible! Because weve had some queries about the project here is a bit of clarification about Lives of the First World War, specifically what you can access for free, what you have to pay for and why, and what to do if you want to reference records you already pay for elsewhere (this is also covered in our FAQs on the site here - ow.ly/wMsVd): - Everybody will always be able to browse Lives of the First World War for free. You dont need to register to browse and view Life Stories. - To add to a Life Story you need to register as a Member. Membership of Lives of the First World War is free. Once you have registered and signed in as a Member you can search, view and connect lots of free records without restriction - Members can also search premium records; you just wont be able to view detailed results, such as images or transcriptions of the original record, without becoming a Friend of Lives of the First World War. - We need to charge for access to some premium records. Conserving the original paper records, creating indexes and catalogues, as well as digitisation, are all expensive processes, and some organisations therefore have to make a charge so they can recover their costs. - You can view the list of records that Friends can access here: ow.ly/wMt0V - If youve already paid to view records elsewhere you dont need to pay again, unless you want to. You can add these records to Lives of the First World War as sources without breaching copyright by using the add external reference tool in the add to life story bar, and selecting either book/publication/archive or copy of official document, depending on which source youre trying to add. You can also use a website as a reference here too. You can then add facts from these sources. You can also post feedback, queries or ideas for improvement here: ow.ly/wMt3y We hope you enjoy using Lives of the First World War. #WW1
