Our newest resident, a rare orange lobster, is quite the jet-setter! She traveled from New England, to Florida, and back home again! Animal-lover Marybeth Jeitner spotted this rare (1-in-10-million rare!!) northern lobster in a Publix grocery store in Florida. Unable to find a suitable home for her nearby, she contacted her friend Nadine King (in photo) of Kittery, Maine, who contacted SSC aquarist Rob Royer about putting the curious crustacean on permanent display. Libby (short for Liberty, named by her rescuers) arrived at the Center Thursday morning after her long journey. She is currently acclimating to our aquarium systems conditions in our back-room husbandry tank and will be put on display once she has established a healthy eating pattern. Libbys orange color is due to the lack of blue pigment in her carapace. She weighs in at 2.5 lbs. and is approximately 12-15 years old. Stay tuned for posts of Libbys progress and debut date.
