Our next installment of Sculptor Saturday features John Angel. Angel was born in Great Britain in 1881 and became a well-known sculptor. He later married and came to the United States where he continued his career. His work in Britain includes war memorials in Exeter and Bridgwater. The George Rogers Clark Sesquicentennial Commission contracted Angel to sculpt a statue of Francis Vigo along the Wabash River. Vigo played an important role in the Clark story as both financier and spy for George Rogers Clark. Angels statue was placed prominently next to the Clark Memorial and portrays Vigo sitting on sacks of fur staring down the Wabash River. Angel later proclaimed that his statue of Vigo was probably the best piece of work I have done.
