Our oldest grandson, 13-year-old Rowan, moved into a dorm at McNeese State University today after being selected to become a member of the Governors Program for Gifted Children. Hes a quiet homebody and was not happy about going away to live and go to school for 7 weeks on a campus he had never set foot on and not knowing anyone there. Once he got there today, he quickly started interacting with his roommates and suitemates & was ready for his parents to leave so he could continue hanging out with his new friends. I know its scary and hard for a kid that age to imagine that being stuck on a college campus, living & going to classes for the summer with kids you dont know, can be fun, but I feel so much better knowing he got off to a good start. I knew how he was feeling because I was in the very first class of the Governors Program for Gifted Children and still remember how those many years ago I was apprehensive about going, but ended up enjoying my 3 summers as a member of that first class. Although there have been alumni parents whose children have/are attending the program, Im the first alumnus with a grandchild in the program. I hope Rowan enjoys it as much as I did as a young girl.
