“Our own future is wrapped up in the future of our country. Our personal future as well as the future of our families, our business and our economy.” unknown. We can not determine our happiness by our past history neither, we can guarantee our unity and peace by our past. As we celebrate Botswana independence day we should reflect and assess the growth of our democracy and whether is enjoyed or celebrated by all. Look at the functions and effectiveness of all the democratic institutions in our land. Is it possible to be proud and happy where your identity , mother tongue, customs are considered tribalistic and uncalled for? Is independence without independence of conscience and reason genuine and complete? Where peoples religious faiths are imposed on those who dont believe under the guise of God fearing, even though on papers Botswana is said to be a secular state. These are some of the issues that need to form part of our independence celebration messages and suggest way forward that can accord those who feel left behind to become proud members of the society. Remember that nation building is the responsibility of all of us but not a preserve for the select few or the control group. We cannot improve our democracy by just keeping on reciting our past but refusing to address the flaws in our democratic system.
