Our present is your future, and your present, our past. Class of 1955 of Northeast High School, the first graduating class of that new school, had, for the most part, already been St Petersburg High School Green Devils. Entering the senior year with two years of history as Green Devils, the class was given the option of remaining Green Devils or going to that new school and being what? The Sawgrass Mudcats? I mean, really, what do you call a school with no identity, no character, and even having to fight the county for the name of Northeast. It was, after all, a county school, and certainly failing the test of northeast within the county, but just an old cow pasture for history, and that just barely outide the great swamp that is now identified as Sawgrass Lake Park. Even the great street of 16th Street turned from pavement to dirt just beyond where the school buses delivered the students to the school. Maybe it should have been named The Old 54th Avenue Cemetery High School with the cemetery the only landmark, save for the old 54th Avenue Elementary School, within a four mile radius of the new school. Even the elementary school held the higher ground, and the high school put in what was surely the lower forty. The lower forty; that place where the bulls and calves are put to graze that the milk producing cows could be kept nearer to the barn. That then, was the plot of the new school; the lower forty --- land of the useless and only sometimes convenient. Green Devil, proud and tested, the first senior class of Northeast only had a class of 95. The Green Devils numbered 400 as counted in their 1955 yearbook. 95 classmates; 33 males and 62 females. Current living and located; 67 --- 21 males and 46 females Deceased; 25 --- 12 males and 13 females Seeking; 3, all females The class of 1955 has 96.8% of their class accounted for with 72.8% of those still living. 36.4% of the men are deceased while only 22.0% of the women are deceased. While there has never been a through investigation on the matter, at least, and the emphasis is on “at least”, 25.4% of those living of the class of 1955 are using e-mails as their primary means of communication. [I personally have 17 e-mail addresses in my own address book for this class and know with certainty that Lorraine Arnola Munch Sturtz as the class representative of that class has an unknown number of more.] The class of 1955 is currently underway in planning their 60th Class Reunion with details not yet determined. Their seeking are these: Dorothy Joan Ballard Caless Patricia Ann Kelly Hutchins Margie Faye Packer
