Our reporters are so damn good. I have so much respect for them. And I know firsthand how hard it is to do these mayhem stories. I started in journalism writing crime stories every day. The hard news reporters at the RJ are better at it than I was. Think about their daily lives. You go to crime scenes. You interview people who are mourning the violent murders of loved ones. Youre calling family members of killers (or some days, child molesters) and asking them to talk about their crazy dead murderous relatives. Youre interviewing police who may still be upset at your paper for some reason or another. And then you sit down and write a compelling summary of all this tragedy -- on deadline. And then you go home and have dinner. Look, I like reading snarky Gawker editorial blog snipes just like you do. But please dont mistake such easy and over-championed blogging for unsung hard news reporting like this. This is the kind of serious journalism that takes actual work to do, that everyone takes for granted. In my case, when I was a cops and courts reporter, I had to get out of it, because the corrosive nature of humanity in regards to cops and robbers ate away at my soul, and I had to get out of it to protect my sanity. All I really mean to say about this is, man, our hard news reporters are exquisite. They are working their asses off to let you know in fine detail what is happening in your community. And please dont take them for granted. Because they are awesome.
