Our season finale concert is this Thursday night! Featuring Coplands Clarinet Concerto with Elizandro Garcia-Montoya, plus de Fallas Three-Cornered Hat, Bizets Carmen Symphony and Márquezs Danzón No. 2, this will be a high-energy close to a great season! Danzón No. 2 is dynamite, plain and simple. It begins slowly and sensuously, to the languid snap of castanets measuring out a rhythm underlying a silky clarinet line. The strings enter with an expanded version of that theme, now to a pulsing bass. The piano introduces a more compelling rhythm, soon punched out by the brass, and before long the heat is on -- sometimes simmering down into a sultry interlude, then flaring back up into a pulsating bonfire of excitement and passion. Nota bene: foot-tapping may prove irresistible, so take care regarding your neighbors shoes. ~Scott Foglesong, NHMF Program Note Annotator
