Our son, Derek Kekona Haugen, got into tattooing when he was in high school. His nickname was “Hawaiian” and a friend did a small tattoo on his back that read “100% Hawaiian.” Later, he read up on the art and began to apply his considerable artistic skills to that art form. During that time, he also had many tattoos done on his own body, including some that he did himself. When he put an abstract fighting chicken on his thigh, his brother, Michael, asked him to do the same thing on his upper arm. Once, I suggested he should take pictures of all the tattoos he poked, and I took pictures of some that he had on his own body. Here are a few examples of both, including his last tattoo – the Hawaiian design on his face. Here also is an example of his fine engraving work. He was an artist. There are hundreds of people walking around with his art on their bodies, and many a home shrine that displays his handiwork too.
