Our trip to Hungary started off with a stroke of bad luck. The cars dynamo broke down near Regensburg and we were forced to spend two days there. Fortunately, Regensburg more than made up for the trouble! This wonderful medieval city is not only a cultural gem but also an ecological highlight! Within the walls of the ancient city we have seen Goosander (the southernmost breeding population of the species), Kingfishers, scores of Common Kestrels breeding in the walls of the cathedral and even an entire family of Beavers! Yesterday we were able to continue our journey and we arrived in Rabapordany just after 10 p.m. This morning I checked a pit in my uncles garden for trapped amphibians, I returned with a bucket full of Spadefoots (Spadefeet? :p) and a Moor Frog! Herpetologists in the Netherlands would murder for a score like that! Later today we visited an oxbow of the Old Danube near Györ. Here we have seen splendid riparian flood forests and we also discovered the nest of a Kingfisher so we were able to enjoy some magnificent sightings of this colourful bird! Other interesting observations so far include Golden Oriole, Nightingale, Green Toad, Banded Demoiselle and many others! Now Im off to walk around the block to look for Tree Frogs :D. Stay tuned for more on our Hungarian adventures!
