Our views of the past are always changing. If a Federal holiday - TopicsExpress

Our views of the past are always changing. If a Federal holiday recognizes one perspective as our national heritage and in the process conjures up pain for many, not to mention the endless my view vs. your view divisiveness, whats the point? Why do we always default to a simplistic narrative? Maybe we can use this occasion to accept the past simply as it was- recognize both the good and the bad aspects from multiple viewpoints, teach children about actions and consequences, and use this occasion to be a more conscious society. So I dont think Columbus Day should be boycotted, but re-purposed from blind glorification into recognition of the complexities triggered by that day in 1492. startribune/local/minneapolis/256788831.html
