Out of nowhere, or almost nowhere, a DHH memory surfaced this morning. Made me laugh. Im at the moment in Pennsylvania, staying with my friends Battista and Dida Gazoli. B made an exquisite lemon risotto last night and this morning at breakfast we were discussing lemons and limes. B is from Brazil and was describing different lime varieties. This flashed me back to the following. We had some DHH guests who were from Florida, and they mistakenly packed one of the inns alarm clocks with them and took it home. They mailed it back to us, carefully wrapped, and tucked into a huge carton of key limes from their very own key lime tree. Our headwaiter, John Mitchell, came in just after the box had been opened. Surveying the clock nestled in the citrus is, he asked, whats this? Whoever was working the front desk explained. Oh, said John. I was afraid it was a lime bomb. (this story also gives me the excuse to post this picture of limes from a market in Nice, France, which I took in September.)
