Outpouring Global condemnation for Banjul terror attack. The President of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh has been receiving letters of global condemnation of the December 30th terror attack on State House, orchestrated by Gambian dissidents based in Senegal, Germany and the United States of America. The letters received by President Jammeh in the aftermath of the event were from the secretary general of the United Nations, Banki-Moon; the President of the Republic of Senegal; the African Union Commision chairperson and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). “The secretary general is following closely developments in The Gambia. He reiterates the United Nations principled condemnation of all attempts to seize power through unconstitutional means. Referring to reports that indicate that the situation in Banjul is calm, he calls for all parties to exercise restraint and to refrain from further violence. Noting the seriousness of any attempt to overthrow governments by force, the secretary general encourages the establishment of a transparent investigation into the events of 30 December, in compliance with due process and respect for the rule of law. In that regard, he urges the government of The Gambia, and its security and defence forces to act in full respect for human rights. The United Nations will continue to closely monitor the situation,” reads a message from the Office of the Secretary General, UN. The letter from the AU chair reads: “The chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, is closely following the situation in The Gambia. She notes with concern the latest developments in the country and urges for calm. The chairperson of the Commission calls on all concerned to work towards development, preserving peace in the country, deepening democracy and promoting human rights, consistent with the relevant AU instruments, including the Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance”. The Senegalese government letter also reads: “The government of the Republic of Senegal strongly condemns the attempt to overthrow the regime of President Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh by a group of insurgents in the night from 29 to 30 December 2014. Senegal is faithful to the principles and values, which substantiate its foreign policy, reaffirmed its opposition to violence and any unconstitutional change of government as a means of access to power”. Meanwhile, The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Yakuba A. Drammeh has also written to the head of state, conveying the Security Council position on the attack. His letter reads: “I have the honour to kindly inform that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in a closed door session held on Wednesday 30 December strongly condemns the coup attempt “against the legal and democratic institutions” in The Gambia. In addition, the UNSC stated that it highly “welcomed normalisation of the situation in the country” and intimated that it will continue to closely monitor the situation. The Council further asserted that the Special Representative of the Secretary General for West Africa, His Excellency Mohammed Ibn Chambers will be visiting The Gambia shortly on a special mission”.
