Outrage Posted by Mark Ridley-Thomas 241pc on June 25, 2013 · Flag Anyone interested in politics, community, human rights and our democratic system heard the news today; the Supreme Court, on a 5-4 vote, struck down a key provision of the landmark Voting Rights Act. I stand with the President and agree when he released the following statement: "I am deeply disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision today. For nearly 50 years, the Voting Rights Act – enacted and repeatedly renewed by wide bipartisan majorities in Congress – has helped secure the right to vote for millions of Americans. Today’s decision invalidating one of its core provisions upsets decades of well-established practices that help make sure voting is fair, especially in places where voting discrimination has been historically prevalent." But, there is something we can do. Visit africanamericanvoterrep.org and make sure you are 1) registered to vote 2) your friends and family are registered and 3) go to our "Voting Resources" section and make sure you know what your rights are. The Voting Rights Act provides that our voting rights will never be abridged based on race or color. As Justice Bader-Ginsburg correctly wrote, "“40 years has not been sufficient time to eliminate the vestiges of discrimination following nearly 100 years” of racial discrimination. While poll taxes and literacy tests no longer bar black citizens from exercising their franchise, subtler modes of discrimination are still employed to dilute the impact of their votes." Our struggle does not end today and we must commit ourselves to making sure we have access to voting and that we excersize our rights.
