Over 100 GCSE Mathematics students from schools across Northern Ireland took part in a Mathematics Careers Afternoon at Queen’s. Students heard about the range of job opportunities available to maths graduates in Northern Ireland and several former QUB maths graduates, who now work for high profile companies including Allstate, AquaQ Analytics, SAP and Ulster Bank, were on hand to highlight how mathematics is crucial in the Northern Ireland economy. The organiser of the Mathematics Careers Afternoon, Dr Daniel Dundas from the School of Mathematics and Physics, said, “Many schoolchildren may feel that the only reason to study mathematics at university is if they want to become a maths teacher. Today’s event has dispelled that myth and shown that mathematics is crucial to the development of the Northern Ireland economy. Many of the companies present today greatly value the skills possessed by maths graduates and actively target them in their annual recruitment rounds. Hopefully, some of those present will be inspired to study maths further at university.”
