Over 200 Women Affected by FistulaThe commissioner clinical services in the ministry of health, Dr. Jacinto Amandua has confirmed that 140 to 200 women in Uganda are living with fistula a disease caused due to the delay in giving birth which leads to the tearing of the cervix among other organs. Dr. Jacinto revealed that 2 million women in Sub Sahara and Asian countries live with this disease and in Uganda the disease is common among women in the regions of western, northern and central and among the poor. He noted that over 1000 cases are repaired every year with the operation costing UGX.700,000 which the poor cannot easily afford however stated that in the financial year budget 2013/14 the ministry has allocated UGX.700M to cater for the repairs of fistula. Meanwhile the technical specialist united nations population fund (UNFPA)Dr. Peter Mukasa also expressed misery that in the 21st century women are still living with fistula saying it’s a violation of their rights to better health adding that currently the country has only 23 fistula doctors with only 13 hospitals able to do a fistula operation. This comes at a time when Uganda is preparing to join the rest of the world to mark world Fistula day.
